President vs Chairman Cup - Kau Sai Chau South
26 May 2020With the weather forecast for the day being thunder and heavy rain, there were many enquiries whether the course would be closed or not. After checking the KSC website every 15 mins it was confirmed that the course would remain open! One fair-weather golfer dropped out (no names mentioned) but all other players turned up on time and went to the driving range after breakfast. Given the long absence from golf, a lot of stretching was observed although I am not sure this has any positive effect. Colours of the day: - President’s team blue; Chairman’s team yellow. The Chairman himself sadly had to sit this match out being under house arrest in South Africa in connection with an alleged Virus.
The first to tee off were Jonny Brock, Phil Head, Simon Hague and Alastair Murray. Before teeing off, Phil was complaining he hasn’t played golf for 6 months! Despite this (or possibly because of this) he displayed impressive marksmanship with shots inside 8 feet on the four par 3s, and winning the “Nearest the pin in 2 shots” challenge on the 7th with a second shot to 4 feet and an easy birdie. There must has still be rust somewhere in his game however as his final score was 78 for 32 stableford points.
The second flight to tee off were Soo Ying Pooi, Bill King, JP Cuvelier and me. Bill had a wonderful round today. He shot 78 and 38 stableford points. On hole 2, he also claim the nearest to the pin. It’s a 150 yard hole downhill into a head wind. He punched an 8 iron with a lower ball flight that landed a few yards in front of the green and the ball kept rolling towards the hole. We all thought he was heading for a hole in one, but sadly just as the ball appeared to be destined for the bottom of the cup, it stopped a few inches short due to the wet green.
After the round, we all went back to the clubhouse and had a bite. Chairman’s team was leading until the very last flight. President’s team average stableford point is 29.6 while the Chairmans team average stableford point is 29.1. Half point differences which makes the President’s Team claim the victory!
